Our Mission and Vision
Explore. Connect. Create. A place where life, work, and play unite!
Strategic Plan 2016-19
From 2012-2014 the Elmwood Park Public Library completed a space redesign, which saw the addition of five public study rooms, a family restroom, and a redesign of both the Adult Services and Kids & Teens Department floor plans, which included new furniture and learning enrichment stations for kids. These improvements have been met with smiles and increased usage.
Throughout 2015, Library staff and Trustees worked with a consulting firm to craft a long-range plan aimed at understanding and fulfilling the needs of the community we serve. We engaged, surveyed, and brainstormed with Elmwood Park residents of all ages, leaders of community organizations, business owners, and school officials. We received positive comments on current programming and staff, along with many practical and inspiring ideas on how to enhance and expand our services as we move forward. What we put together focuses on evaluating and enhancing our services to community groups, schools, and special populations, providing enriching and educational programming, as well as access to technology, developing more flexible and welcoming spaces, and improving convenience for our residents.
That sounds great, but you might also ask: "What does it mean for the Library to be a place where life, work, and play unite?"
The Library supports individuals and families as they grow and navigate through life. A young child plays at the puppet theater, bringing stories she hears to life. A six-year-old checks out his first book as he begins the rewarding journey of learning to read. An elementary school group creates sculptures on the 3D printer, blending creativity, engineering, and technology. Teenagers volunteer and gain valuable work experience as they transition to adulthood. An adult attends a program and learns new art skills that he never had time to develop before. A job seeker uses our public computers to identify the next step on her career path. Someone likes us on Facebook and shares a favorite “DIY,” or do-it-yourself, activity we host with their family and friends. A few individuals with shared passions come together using one of our meeting rooms and begin a community group with a mission to better the village they call home.
In other words, we are a solid foundation for people of all ages to connect with their neighbors, explore worlds of fact and fiction, and gain the skills and knowledge to create their own personal corner of the universe.
We're excited to have already reached some important goals - such as enhancing our Early Reader collection and providing an Adult Bestsellers Club. We are also excited about new ideas for this year, including Mac laptops, mobile checkout at local festivals and school events, and a community group portal on our website. As your busy year unfolds, we hope you will continue to explore and discover what's new at the Library. Take the time to connect and create with us and your fellow Elmwood Park residents.
We are pleased to share the 2016-19 Strategic Plan with you and encourage your comments and suggestions.
