Library Update for Elmwood Park Schools - September 2016

Library News & Services

Introductions for the 2016-17 School Year

Greetings Teachers & School Administrators,

Welcome to our second year of an Elmwood Park Public Library eNewsletter designed specifically for Elmwood Park School District 401!

We will be bringing you news and information about the Library, and how staff and services can benefit you and your students.

If you ever have questions about anything you read, or have requests and suggestions for us, please don't hesitate to contact us.  We want your students to be as successful as possible!

Library Tours

A great way to kick off the school year is with a visit to the Library to show your students all that is available to them.

Call or email us to schedule a Library tour for your class, and we can customize your visit based on your grade levels, interests, or needs for specific assignments. We can even offer a special program while you are here, such as a story time, library information scavenger hunt, technology workshop, database instruction, or something else.

We look forward to seeing you at the Library!

Textbooks Available for Students at the Library

Do your students sometimes say that they forgot their textbooks at school and so couldn't complete an assignment? No more!

We have all of your textbooks at the Library, spanning grades 1-12.  The books cannot be checked out, but students can use the books in the Library or make photocopies of the pages they need.  Just have them ask at the Kids & Teens Desk and we'll show them where the textbooks are.

If you find that we are missing something or don't have a new textbook that was added this year, please let us know so we can update our collection!

September is National Library Card Signup Month

Having a library card is an integral tool for a successful school year.

You can, of course, check out the usual books, graphic novels, eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and video games. But did you know that you can also check out Kindle eReaders, bike locks, and a Nintendo DS?

With your card you can also use our free public computers and access all of our online databases and resources, including Brainfuse (online tutoring), Mango Languages, magazine and newspaper article searching, and more.

Get or renew a card in September

If you don’t have an Elmwood Park library card, or if your card is expiring soon, stop by the Library during September (or any time) to get or renew your card. All ages can get one. Adults must present a photo ID with their current Elmwood Park address on it. Anyone under 18 must have parent or caregiver present a photo ID with current address and sign for the card.

All of September we will be having a raffle for new card holders and patrons who renew expiring cards. Prizes will include gift cards to lo-cal restaurants and stores, and a gift basket for kids. Items will be on display in the 1st floor display case.

Flyer in Spanish & Polish

As mentioned above, we are working to expand our reach to our English-learning community.  We feel that getting a library card is an invaluable tool for success, and so want to spread information about the Library as much as possible. If you have Spanish or Polish speaking students/parents that you would like to give this information to, please find a translated flyer about National Library Card Signup Month under our new For the Classroom page on our website.

Updated Kids & Teens Website

We are currently working on updating our website to make our Kids & Teens area better organized, easier to navigate with more menu options, and more informative about some of our newer additions to the collection and department.

A new addition to this portion of our website is our Teacher section, where we will detail all of the resources available to you and your classroom.  While we will cover most of this information throughout the year in these newsletters, please visit our new Visits & Tours and For the Classroom pages to find out more and let us know what you think.

Promotions in Spanish & Polish

As mentioned above, we have recently been making an effort to have more Library literature available in Spanish and Polish.  One of our biggest efforts recently was translating our Fall Newsletter, of which the English version was recently mailed out to homes in Elmwood Park.

If you have Spanish or Polish speaking students and families, please use these links to find the PDFs of the Spanish and Polish versions that you can distribute as needed.

Want to take Brainfuse on the go?  There is also a Brainfuse app where you can get live tutor help, take class notes, or track homework assignments.  Get it for iOS or Android devices.

IL Driver's License & Permit Practice Tests

Do you have students looking forward to getting their driving permits, or who are currently enrolled in Driver's Ed who are excited about getting their license soon?

Let them know about our free resource, Driving-tests.org, which provides practice tests for both the IL Driver's License Exam and IL Permit Test.

On our Test Preparation page you will also find the links to the Illinois Rule of the Road guide, which is also available in Spanish and Polish.
