New Birthday Club for Kids

The Library wants to celebrate your child’s birthday!

Starting January 2017, kids up through 6th grade can sign up for our new Birthday Club. When your child’s birthday approaches, we will send them a birthday card and bookmark. We will also post their first name on our Birthday Bulletin Board.  Sign up at the Kids & Teens Desk.

Read to the Dog Program

Call to register • Jan. 12 | Feb. 9 • 7:00-8:15 p.m. • Ages 4-7

Reading to a Dog can help improve a child’s reading and communication skills through short reading sessions with a trained therapy dog.  Having a non-judgmental listener and furry friend to read to that won't laugh at mistakes allows the child to practice their skills in a fun, relaxed manner, which increases confidence and builds interest in reading.

Each month, call the Kids & Teens Desk at 708.295.1237 or stop in to book a 15-minute spot with our furry friend, therapy dog Woody, who looks forward to listening to your child.

NEW:  Early Reader Nonfiction Collection

To make things easier for young children and parents to find books on certain topics, we recently combed through our Early Reader Collection and separated out nine shelves worth of books with popular nonfiction topics.

This new Nonfiction Early Reader Collection is now located under the Parenting Magazines, after the end of the regular Early Reader Collection, and is organized by topic, which include:

  • Animals
  • Careers
  • Food
  • People
  • Places
  • School
  • Space
  • Sports
  • and many more!

All the topics are still color-coded like the rest of our Early Reader Collection.  To find out more, visit our website, or ask the staff in Kids & Teens!

Prom Dress Extravaganza

Prom is an important, but expensive, event for high schoolers.  That’s why this coming spring we are planning a Prom Dress giveaway to provide free dresses to our resident teens.

In order to make this giveaway possible, we need dresses! So between now and March 15, please donate your gently used dresses to the Kids & Teens Desk, which we will then use in our giveaway. We will have more details about the giveaway after March 15.

Database of the Month:  Axis 360 eBook & eAudiobook Collection

Do you like reading eBooks? Is your New Year's resolution to read more? Our featured database of the month, Axis 360, can help!

Axis 360 is a great collection of eBooks and eAudiobooks that you can check out and download to your device with your library card. This collection has many titles that cannot be found with our other eBook service, OverDrive.  Visit the eBooks & More page for instructional guides for getting started with specific devices.

Need help learning how to use Axis 360 to read or listen to books on your tablet? We have a Bring Your Own Device class coming up on January 11 which will cover using both Axis 360 and OverDrive (our other eBook collection).  Sign up today.

NEW:  Fun, Educational Puzzles for Kids

Looking for another fun thing to do at the Library with your kids?  We now have large, foam-piece puzzles that can be put together of the alphabet, numbers, and a U.S.A. state map.

In addition, there are also lacing cards, boards with locks & latches, and wooden shoes to practice shoe-tying.  Find all these new activities in clear plastic containers sitting on the new bookshelf that Crush (our tortoise) is resting on.

Upcoming Painting in Adult Services

We are looking forward to putting a new coat of paint on the walls in Adult Services in March to freshen things up!

In preparation for this project, we will be removing wallpaper for the next month or two while the Library is closed. Please pardon our mess, and keep an eye out for an update as to when we will begin painting. Thanks for your patience.
