1000 books horizontal 400wAbout the Program

1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is a nationwide challenge that encourages parents and caregivers to regularly read aloud to their children. By reading just one book a night, families can reach the 1,000-book goal in three years while providing children essential early literacy skills.

Research shows that the most reliable predictor of school success is being read to during early childhood. Reading to children from an early age can help close the vocabulary gap and prepare children to enter Kindergarten with the skills they need to succeed. Most importantly, sharing books with children promotes a lifelong love of books and reading. It is also a great way for children and their caregivers to bond!

To help encourage you to participate in this important activity, the Library has an incentive program to help you keep track of your books. Registration is ongoing at the Kids & Teens desk, and children may finish the program anytime before beginning Kindergarten.

Read or listen to books, magazines, or audiobooks. Read the same title as many times as you like. Any books you read count. You do not have to read books JUST from the Library. Books read for summer and winter reading programs and in library-led programs like Story Time count, too!

Track the number of titles you read on your chart by coloring in a circle for each book you read!

Return to the library after every 100 books to pick a small prize from the treasure chest. At 500 books, you’ll receive a special gift. Finish 1000 books before your child enters Kindergarten to receive a certificate and an extra special gift pack!
