swan new19 banner vertical edited 400wYour Elmwood Park Public Library belongs to SWAN (System Wide Automated Network), which allows us to provide you with quick and easy access through the online catalog to the books, movies, and other material from 79 other libraries in the metropolitan area.

At the beginning of May, there will be 19 new libraries from Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties that will be joining SWAN, bringing almost 2 million items with them. Once these libraries' items are added to our system, you will be able to access over 9.8 million items by placing holds through the SWAN Online Catalog, or by asking staff to place holds for you.

As you can imagine, this is a big project.

  1. SWAN staff have already been working on adding the new libraries and their items to the catalog.  Unfortunately, this means that for the next couple of weeks you may see duplicate records in the catalog for many items.  Until SWAN staff run a deduplication process later in May, you may not be able to place holds on all of these duplicate items.

  2. The big official scheduled upgrade for our catalog and checkout systems will take place on Monday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 1.  During this two day upgrade, the SWAN Online Catalog and our checkout systems will be running on limited capabilities.  What does this mean for you?

During the April 30 & May 1 upgrade period, you will still be able to:

  • YES - Check out.  You can still check out items at the front Circulation Desk, though you MUST have your library card in order to so, as staff will not be able to look up your library record during this time.
  • YES - Search the catalog.  You can still search for items in the SWAN Online Catalog, though item availability status may not be accurate during these two days, as the catalog will reflect the item's status from Sunday, April 29, before the upgrade began.

During the April 30 &  May 1 upgrade period, you will not be able to:

  • NO - Place holds.  Neither you nor staff will be able to place any holds.
  • NO - Renew items.  Staff will not be able to renew items for you.
  • NO - Pay fines.  Staff will not be able to accept payment for fines.
  • NO - Self checkout.  You will not be able to use the self-checkout stations.
  • NO - View, modify, or renew account. - Staff will not be able to access your account, which means they cannot make changes or renew your account.  They will also not be able to tell you what items you have checkout, or when items are due.
  • NO - My Account online.  You will not be able to log in to the My Account feature through the online catalog. This means you will not be able to view your current checkouts or holds, renew items, pay fines online, place holds, or change your PIN.
  • NO - BookMyne app.  The Bookmyne app will be unavailable.
  • NO - New cards.  Staff will not be able to create any new library cards.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.  If you have any questions about duplicate records, the scheduled downtime, or the new libraries joining SWAN, please don't hesitate to ask us. We are excited to soon be able to bring you access to more of what you love!
