kim muralLibrary staff and Trustees are saddened to announce that our Head of Kids & Teens, Kim Viita, passed away on Friday, October 4th. She passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. Kim spent her life supporting others through good works - being a librarian, sharing her love of reading with students, leading the Young Adult Council. She brought a smile and positivity to all situations. She was a loving wife and mother, beloved sister, aunt, daughter, cousin, an amazing leader, and the most true and loyal friend the Library has ever seen.

The Library will be closed on Tuesday, October 8 so that staff may attend her services. Should you like to attend, services will be held on Monday, Oct. 7 (visitation between 3-8 p.m.) and Tuesday, Oct. 8 (visitation at 9:30 a.m., and services at 10:30 a.m.) at Ivins/Moravecek Funeral Home at 80 E. Burlington St., Riverside.

The Kids & Teens department has paper and art supplies on hand for anyone wishing to send a card, pictures, or happy memories to her family. The Library will also be developing a way to remember and recognize Kim's contributions to our community in the coming days. Any donations to this effort will go to the Library's Gift Fund. Should you wish to donate to her family, there is also a GoFundMe page (search Kimmi Viita).

We are all grieving, but I know that if we keep her smile in our hearts and minds, we will be strong for each other and carry forth with the passion and determination that she brought to the table every day.

Any comments to this post will be passed on to family, however, staff will not be replying at this time. If you have any other questions, please contact the Library Director at 708.395.1230.
