banned books week wordshavepower 400wSeptember 24-30, 2017 is National Banned Books Week.

During Banned Books Week we take the time to highlight books that have been challenged or banned from libraries in the past and present, and talk about the dangers of censorship.

Each year, the American Library Association's (ALA) Office for Intellectual Freedom compiles a list of the top ten most frequently challenged books in order to inform the public about censorship in libraries and schools. The ALA condemns censorship and works to ensure free access to information. Below are the top 10 books that were challenged in 2016. Or take a look at the Top Ten Most Challenged Book Lists from previous years.

Banned Books Week was launched in 1982 in response to a sudden surge in the number of challenges to books in schools, bookstores and libraries. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982 according to the American Library Association.
