About the Garden Club   (see events below)centennialparkplanter 400w

The Elmwood Park Garden Club is a group of people from Elmwood Park and the surrounding area who share an interest in and a love of gardening. Our purpose is to learn about plants and nature while enjoying each other’s company.  We have been together as a club for over 15 years.

During meetings we explore ways to design and care for any size garden from an entire property to just a potted plant guided by professional speakers, films, and by sharing our knowledge with each other. Our meetings sometimes consist of hands on activities.

kokedama 400wOne of our very successful hands-on activities was to make a Kokedama. That is a Japanese technique for planting and sustaining one plant within a live moss ball which is just another plant (picture included). We have made dish gardens, created both live and artificial arrangements, and have taken field trips to places like nurseries and the Botanic Garden. Another popular meeting is held in the spring when we have a plant exchange. Members bring extra plants from their gardens to trade for plants that other members bring. Everyone goes home with some new treasures. We also occasionally have joint meetings and activities with our neighbors in the Montclare Galewood Garden Club.

sideyard 400wEach year we sponsor a Garden Walk in July featuring gardens from Elmwood Park and nearby areas. We showcase both members’ and non-members’ gardens. The walk brings people from all over together to enjoy what we and our neighbors have created. The proceeds from this year’s walk will help to benefit the food pantry at St. Celestine Parish. Another public activity we participate in is to plant and care for one of the raised planters in Centennial Park each year. This is a nice way to let members experiment with their creativity while we help to beautify our community.

We welcome anyone who would like to learn and laugh with us whether or not you are an Elmwood Park Resident. Our dues for the year are only $25.00 and include all meetings as well as discounts for some activities and an end of the year party. Come to a meeting and see what we are about. We hope that you will join us!
